FARES EFFECTIVE FROM 1 OCTOBER 2006

i hardly take public transport since i started driving.

when i do take the occasional bus, i dun usually pay attention to the amt deducted since Ez-link is so convenient and i trust transitlink to haf tested the system thoroughly.

anyway, since i m car-less tis wk and being a sucker for bus rides, i decided to take a bus home last nite.

being boliao, i counted the no. of stops needed to get home. 44 stops in total, not tat bad, i guess. the ride took barely over an hr.

i oso noted the bus fare displayed at the bus-stop. $1.08, not tat exp.

since i haf noted the bus fare, i causally checked the deduction made at my stop $1.38!! WHY THE 30 CENTS DIFFERENCE!

I verified tis from the Transitlink website and realised tat the amount deducted is correct. the new fare effective 1 Oct 06 is $1.38.

the fare didn't jump from $1.08 to $1.38 at one shot but still tat's a 27% increase!

i wonder when was the fare stated at bus-stops last updated.

given tat most ppl would need to take min 2 bus rides a day ( to & from work, barring transfers), tat's a huge huge hike in fares! we need to look at the big picture in totality and not juz treat each 10cents increase as a small increment.

unfortunate ppl like mi dun live near enuff any MRT stations to walk there so if i take bus->MRT-->bus to work, doesn't tat work out to be at least 30 cents more each time the fare is adjusted??
60 cents both ways is horrific, by the sound of it.

i wonder if the fare increase done annually is offset by rebates from transfers or juz charged upfront for each leg of the journey.

can someone wif better maths enlighten mi on tis?

haf the tax rebates, govt bonuses and other subsidizes increased by 27% too to match this increase, i wonder?

mayb the govt haben thot of tis. guess i should post tis question to my MP since i'm sure he's terribly concerned abt the livelihood and well-being of everyone in his ward and is working towards for the better good of everyone in SG.
otherwise, y bother to stand for elections, rite?

and now tat i haf tis piece of 'evidence' of inflation or higher cost of living, i muz make sure tat my boss matches the 27% increase at the minimum, or i can't even afford to take public transport to work liao.

or mayb we should all idolise lance armstrong and start pedalling. will save u millions in the long run.
